ah non. c'est pas moi. c'est un bon copain. et Patrick a écrit : -------- You created a lexicon of 1340 root words in one day? Are you *human*? :) I am envious. I, at my best, do about 50 a day. Then I spend hours changing my mind, making some words derivations and others rootwords, eliminating entire semantic dimensions, and playing with idioms. ------ 50 a day is quite a lot ! i recently came up with this lexicon after months of thoughts too - criss-crossing the kanjis i sonsider most frequent with lists of most frequent words in english and french i could find on the net. i get what you mean by "semantic dimension". i think it better to make a clear a system of derivation and compounding before making a lexicon. my lexicon works with my set of derivation and compounding from root words, which is very stable by now. translating natlangs helped me a lot to pick root words like "civil servant" or "public event". they seem odd at first sight but are so helpful in daily life. i derive "poor" and "wealth" from "rich" or "outside" from "inside", "sell" from buy", etc. like many of us do. but i still keep some roots like "age" and "chair" even though i can derive them from "old" and "sit". each entry of this lexicon is attributed a kanji with as matching a meaning as possible. that was hard work :-). mathias
