Wouldn't those be *volumes*, rather than surfaces? (Yes, I remember

Yes, it is. There's no reason why you can't use that, unless
you want your cultures to interact with our 3spatialD + 1temporalD
universe, which would be tricky (really fun for your people,
very confusing for us 3D mortals!).
