A handful of days before my uncle's 40th birthday, he killed himself.

See now, without an 'on the' before it, and forgetting that Americans
can't write short dates, I read that as five on twenty-three[1]. Took me
ages to work it it meant the twenty-third of the fifth. I'll never
understand the logic[2] behind it. I mean, we quite happily do May 10
and 10.05.03 (which is read, as I indicated, 'the tenth of the fifth oh
three').
[1]: yes, i have been doing too much maths. I was told today that I
should be a teacher.[3]
[2]: Yeah, I know logic and language do not necessarily meet.
[3]: no I won't become a teacher. My mother's one, so that automatically
rules me out; and there's nothing in high school maths that is even
vaguely interesting. And had being a tutorer/lecturer/practice class
assistant (or equiv. thereof) been intended, i'm not doing maths after
this semester... A fact I should not be disappointed about (maths being
a subject to be done and hated, not enjoyed), but I am.
Tristan.
