These questions are comforting evidence that American Pop Culture is not as
all-pervasive as it is sometimes accused of being. Understandable in
Damon's case; apparently it has not even pervaded into Sally's American
household.......;-)
Long Story: There was a stand-up comedian named Ellen De Generes. She got
a TV sit-com. There was speculation that Ms. De Generes was lesbian. At
some point in her TV show she revealed that yes, she was. At about the same
time, it was revealed that she was having a romantic involvement with a
sometime actress named Anne Heche (who may or may not have been in the cast
of the show). Since Ellen was the first major TV personality to come out, a
great deal of publicity resulted; her ratings took off. The next season of
the Ellen Show dealt with frankly gay themes (in a humourous way, of course)
and was avidly watched by many in the gay community (sorry, not me; but my
lesbian friends were fans). Consternation from such as Jerry Falwell et
al...... the show ended after that season. Shortly thereafter, Ellen and
Anne split up-- to more commentary in the popular and gay press. Ms. Heche
apparently had a brief period of strange behavior, which got reported....
Then, she announced her engagement to a man. More $1.98 psychobabble in the
popular press. Then the Barbara Walters interview, in which Anne Heche
discussed her abusive childhood, second personality, sexuality, talking to
God in a private language, future career moves, etc. etc.
The hour-long interview took place on ABC TV maybe a week or two before the
recent disaster. ABC may provide transcripts. There was enough time-lapse
between Sally's interview and this, and such a totally different context,
that I think Sally need not fear being considered any crazier than she
already is (JOKE! JOKE!). For further info, consult back-issues of People
Magazine at your doctor's office, or The Advocate.
IMHO Ms. De Generes has run over her 15 mins. of fame; Ms. Heche is at
maybe 12.5 mins. and counting slowly. I may have garbled some of the
details above, but then, I have a hard time taking any of this very
seriously. :-)))))))
