I grew up in the 40's and 50's when "black" people were still "colored".
"Colored" covered a lot of ground, however. People of my complexion were
typically called "high yella" and I suppose if I were to characterize my
skin color it would be yellowish-tan. If I were a leather-good, I probably
would be called "natural". Black women with a kind of bronze complexion
were called "redbones", males of that complexion were typically just called
"red", often becoming a nickname, e.g. Redd Foxx, Detroit Red (later Malcolm
X). We were and continue to be a people of many colors.
