It may amuse someone to know that in Swedish, this ending is rendered as
['A:s@]. It may not be entirely reasonable to infer that "eae" spells schwa.

Nom pl -e:s, acc pl -e:s or -i:s, according to Wikipedia. I seem to recall
reading that the -i:s ending was favoured until the 1st century AD, then fell
out of use.
