On some subconscious level, I too must parse them to the same meaning, or
I'd not have written the 1st version of the sentence.
One a conscious level, for me they are different. In the 1st, "3 decades
ago" tries to modify "remember(ed)", but being n conflict with "just", is
suspended until my parsing hits a place where it's acceptable.
Interestingly, in my conlang Bes Dis'z, "3 decades ago" could be converted
to
"being-passed-complete 3-decades"
a modifier for the entire phrase:
(being-passed-complete 3-decades) I-remember very-old book.
or, for the less linearly written form,
.....I-remember very-old book.
being-passed-complete 3-decades
