Depends. What font format are you using, and what system are you working on?
The most common answer would be that you work under Windows, and that the 
font is True Type. In this case, copying the font to the Fonts folder won't 
work. It's not a normal folder. The only way to install a True Type font is 
to go to the Fonts folder and under the menu Files, choose "Install New 
Font...". There, just point at where you put your font and click on OK. If 
your font was correctly created, it will now be available to any program 
which makes use of fonts.
In other cases, you need to tell first what your OS is and the format of 
your font. Each OS handles things differently.
