I have a hard time believing these figures. I suppose that people could
be good at faking literacy, but I have a hard time believing that a
tenth, or even a quarter according to John Cowan, could be illiterate,
unless you're using a pretty narrow definition of literacy.

Yeah, I've encountered those. Literacy was something *rare* in medieval
times.
P.S., I bought the current issue of Fantasy and Science-Fiction. Pretty
good story.
