Greek term for "popular" as opposed to élite. It is e.g. used for one of the two varieties of modern written Greek,

Greek term for "common", commonly used by linguists to denote varieties arisen through dialect leveling.

The term is commonly used with reference to the Middle Indo-Aryan languages. The idea of the Sanskrit grammarians was that the Prakrits had "grown forth" (the literal meaning of _praak.rta_) from the Vedic language, while Sanskrit had been "put in order" (again the literal meaning of _sa.msk.rta_) by the grammarians. /BP B.Philip Jonsson <mailto:bpj@...>bpj@netg.se <mailto:melroch@...>melroch@my-deja.com ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~__ Anant' avanaute quettalmar! \ \ __ ____ ____ _____________ ___ __ __ __ / / \ \/___ \\__ \ /___ _____/\ \\__ \\ \ \ \\ \ / / / / / / / \ / /Melroch\ \_/ // / / // / / / / /___/ /_ / /\ \ / /Melarocco\_ // /__/ // /__/ / /_________//_/ \_\/ /Eowine__ / / \___/\_\\___/\_\ I neer Pityancalimeo\ \_____/ /ar/ /_atar Mercasso naan ~~~~~~~~~Cuinondil~~~\_______/~~~\__/~~~Noolendur~~~~~~ || Lenda lenda pellalenda pellatellenda cuivie aiya! || "A coincidence, as we say in Middle-Earth" (JRR Tolkien)
