Greek term for "common", commonly used by linguists to denote varieties
arisen through dialect leveling.

The term is commonly used with reference to the Middle Indo-Aryan
languages. The idea of the Sanskrit grammarians was that the Prakrits had
"grown forth" (the literal meaning of _praak.rta_) from the Vedic language,
while Sanskrit had been "put in order" (again the literal meaning of
_sa.msk.rta_) by the grammarians.
