My dad got sent an attachment named navidad.exe last December and it was a
trojan horse program. He opened it. We were able to fix his system, but
things could've been much worse.

Generally, if you get an attachment from anybody you don't know, delete it.
Especially an .exe file. Also, newer browsers like IE 5.x or Netscape 4.x or
6 can handle Visual Basic code, so .vbs files can be malicious in nature.
Make sure you have the appropriate security alerts set up in Options.

Also, if you use mIRC or any other IRC clients, there are A LOT of viruses,
trojan horses, worms and that lot going around. Do not accept anything with
a double extension or anything (like .txt.ini or .jpg.exe) and do not accept
files ending in .exe, .pif, .com, .bat, .vbs, .ini, .dll, .js, .lnk, .mrc,
.pl, .scr or .shs. Be careful of .doc and .dot files if they have MS Word
macros.
