Clearly, those sounds are difficult to produce for people with large, protruding fangs! ;-) I'm fascinated by the coexistence of uvular "r" and "gh"! Maybe those guys.EPICENE had very large uvulae too. Probably from growling a lot... FWIW Munster Irish has both /R/ and /Q/ too, and T. mentions that he disliked "Gaelic" -- which he elsewhere subdivided into "Scots G." and "Irish G." --, but liked the land and people of Ireland (tho most probably qua *English* speakers who didn't think his religious affiliation was strange or problematic! :) /BP B.Philip Jonsson <bpj@...> <melroch@...> ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~__ Anant' avanaute quettalmar! \ \ __ ____ ____ _____________ ___ __ __ __ / / \ \/___ \\__ \ /___ _____/\ \\__ \\ \ \ \\ \ / / / / / / / \ / /Melroch\ \_/ // / / // / / / / /___/ /_ / /\ \ / /Melarocco\_ // /__/ // /__/ / /_________//_/ \_\/ /Eowine__ / / \___/\_\\___/\_\ I neer Pityancalimeo\ \_____/ /ar/ /_atar Mercasso naan ~~~~~~~~~Cuinondil~~~\_______/~~~\__/~~~Noolendur~~~~~~ || Lenda lenda pellalenda pellatellenda cuivie aiya! || "A coincidence, as we say in Middle-Earth" (JRR Tolkien)
