Clearly, those sounds are difficult to produce for people with large,
protruding fangs! ;-)
I'm fascinated by the coexistence of uvular "r" and "gh"! Maybe those
guys.EPICENE had very large uvulae too. Probably from growling a lot...
FWIW Munster Irish has both /R/ and /Q/ too, and T. mentions that he
disliked "Gaelic" -- which he elsewhere subdivided into "Scots G." and
"Irish G." --, but liked the land and people of Ireland (tho most probably
qua *English* speakers who didn't think his religious affiliation was
strange or problematic! :)
