heya,
i was glancing at a "History of the Hebrew Language" book a few weeks ago
in my school library (a different book this time), and it had a chart of
the phonology of Proto-Semitic. So i had an idea of making a Semitic
conlang, but like Judean, it's pretty much only phonology and sound
shifts so far, and probably'll be for a while.
So here're the sound shifts, coming from Proto-Semitic to my possible
Semitic Conlang:
(arranged like the chart in the book)
( <e> = emphatic ; <l> = lateralized ; <i> = interdental
<v> = voiced ; <a> = approximant )
Bilabial:
[p] >> [p]
[b] >> [b]
[m] >> [m]
Interdental:
[T] >> [T]
[D] >> [D]
[T<e>] >> [t<i><e>]
[D<e><l>] >> [t<i><e>]
Dental:
[t] >> [t]
[d] >> [d]
[t<e>] >> [t<e>]
[s] >> [s]
[z] >> [z]
[s<e>] >> [t<e>]
[l] >> [l]
[s<l>] >> [T]
[r] >> [r]
[n] >> [n]
Prepalatal:
[S] >> [S]
Dorsopalatal:
[k] >> [k]
[g] >> [g]
[k<e>] >> [k<e>]
Velar:
[x] >> [C]
[G] >> [C<v>]
Pharyngeal:
[H] >> [H]
[H<v>] >> [H<v><a>]
Laryngeal:
[?] >> [?]
[h<v>] >> [h]
Short Vowels:
[a] >> [@]
[i] >> [e]
[u] >> [o]
Long Vowels:
[a:] >> [a]
[i:] >> [i]
[u:] >> [u]
And Semivowels [w] and [j].
So that's 24 consonants, 2 semivowels, and 6 vowels.
