I don't believe it, but I can't bring any evidence to bear against it either.
In poking around for this, I ran into a truly astounding doublet, whereby
the Greek root "authent-" has come into English twice: "authentic" < Fr
< Latin < Gk, and "effendi" < Turkish < MGk.
