As I recall from the vintage 1900 encyclopedia that got me started in
linguistics, Indo-Aryan and Indo-Germanic were originally synonymous. No
more, of course.
As everyone probably knows, "Iran" derives from the IE form of "aryan", as
does "Iron" the name of the Ossetes in the Caucasus, believed to be the
descendants of the "Alan" people (Lat. alani)
