Amazingly, Texas has no official language, but it's a de facto bilingual state. English is the sole official language of the vast majority of US states (and every Southern state except Texas), and shares official status with Hawai'ian in Hawai'i. I remember riding a bus through a part of town in Seattle where all the signs were in both Korean and English, with the English part often being smaller and written underneath the Korean. That's the Language Police for ya....

Punjabi *might* be official in Pakistan, but I'm not really sure. I think it's called Lahnda there, and written in Arabic script rather than Gurmukhi. Well... Persian has three main dialects and each is official in one country: Farsi in Iran, Dari (Afghani) in Afghanistan, Tajik in Tajikistan. But those are more often considered separate languages aren't they? Tigrinya is spoken in both Eritrea (where it is official) and Ethiopia (where it is not official but is still widespread). English and Arabic are both also co-official in Eritrea, which became independent from Ethiopia in 1993. You also have the numerous cases of Autonomous Republics in Russia, where Russian shares official status with Tatar, Chechen, Bashkir, Chuvash, Yakut, Buryat blah blah blah.... The best place to look for verification is, not suprisingly, the SIL Ethnologue (http://www.ethnologue.com)! ~Danny~
