You will need to describe your theory of time travel first, in order
for the tenses to make sense. In a branching-worlds model of
time-travel, all travel is lateral in some sense, because you always
land in an "alternate" past or future. Things are different if you can
come back to the "same world".

One movie that I can't recommend highly enough is Primer.
http://www.primermovie.com/

It's the best SF movie I've seen in a long time, and certainly the
most intelligent time-travel story I've ever heard of on film. If you
order the DVD, you will surely watch it several times, with friends.

They don't get into the linguistic aspects of time travel, except for
one line "I'm not hungry, I ate later this afternoon".
