We-ell, in the SF universe where Tairezazh and Steianzh are spoken, I guess
literacy is very near 100%. Writing/reading is undoubtly taught at an early
age, at compulsory schools.
In the society behind my new project, Kalini Sapak, literacy is limited to a
small élite of "intellectuals" (poets, wise men, and some chieftains).
Writing is taught by older mentors to their chosen apprentices on a
one-to-one personal basis. Undoubtly, there'll also be some traders etc
who've picked up writing for practical reasons from more culturally inclined
neighbouring peoples, and there may also be some literate slaves etc from
such cultures. On the whole, however, the Kalini have an oral culture.
