I guess it's just one of those semantic drift things. "Current" is no
doubt a perfectly reasonable English gloss of "strøm", but there are
different connotations associated with them. Due, no doubt, to the
fact that the same phenomenon was dubbed "strøm" by you and
"electricity" by us...
