I suppose it could be feasible.  Just think of the different possible beep
sounds as phonemes, varying along different dimensions than the human ones.
But I doubt it would be of much use, as the machines would do just as well
with an infrared signal, or radio waves, and humans certainly didn't
understand R2-D2 in the movies.
