Hehe, muse-lettres are just a lil thing I send out to my friends - or
whoever is intrigued - that consists (usually) of a quote or 2 and/or a poem or
2... or 3)
Forthwith, here's a recent copy/sample:
2003. Oct. 08 muse-lettre: Trickster Incarnate & Eternal
MUCH MADNESS IS DIVINEST SENSE
Much madness is divinest sense
To a discerning eye -
Much sense the starkest madness.
'Tis the majority
In this, as all, prevail.
Assent and you are sane;
Demur, you're straightway dangerous
And handled with a chain.
---- Emily Dickinson (1830-1886)
BRAHMA
If the red slayer thinks he slays,
Or if the slain think he is slain,
They know not well the subtle ways
I keep, and pass, and turn again.
Far or forgot to me is near;
Shadow and sunlight are the same;
The vanquished gods to me appear;
And one to me are shame and fame.
They reckon ill who leave me out;
When me they fly, I am the wings;
I am the doubter and the doubt,
And I the hymn the Brahmin sings.
The strong gods pine for my abode.
And pine in vain the Sacred Seven;
But thou, meek lover of the good!
Find me, and turn thy back on heaven.
--- Ralph Waldo Emerson (1803-1882)
THE SOUL SELECTS HER OWN SOCIETY
The soul selects her own society,
Then shuts the door.
To her divine majority
Present no more.
Unmoved she notes the chariots pausing
At her low gate;
Unmoved, an emperor be kneeling
Upon her mat.
I've known her from an ample nation
Choose one,
Then close the valves of her attention
Like stone.
