I would imagine Yahoo!Groups is simply a subscriber to the mailing list and receives email in the same way you and I do -- only that it's not a person that then displays the mail on their screen but a computer program that adds the message to an archive.

I imagine because the special Yahoo!Groups "bot" email address is still subscribed to the list.
