Certainly, using the Holy Name as a blessing could not be considered an
improper use, as forbidden by scripture. Using it as a curse, or even
worse, the Egyptian practice of using the names of gods for ritual magic,
would most certainly have been blasphemy. Over the centuries, the Jews
became more and more cautious about the possibility of accidental misuse of
the Name, until they ceased to use it at all.
