It must have been the memory of a bygone era surfacing unexpectedly despite
the fact that I was typing <'> with no shift key even as I wrote that, possibly
helped by the fact that the shift key was in fact needed for the < and >
on either side of it, not to mention the fact that I just type so gosh-darned
fast.
(Some older computer keyboards, including the first ones I ever used,
had ' as shift-7 and " as shift-2)
