`Deutsch' means 'of the people'. `People' would be _deut_, though I'm not sure if it survived (the English cognate, which would've been *thead IIRC, certainly didn't). I think _Deutsch_ would've been *theedish in English, though if it was, it probably would've regularised back to *theadish. I don't know if _tud_ is related or not, and http://www.bartleby.com/61/roots/IE532.html doesn't help any. My conlang, Føtisk, is cognate to _Deutsch_ as well. (Th > f, eu > /2:/, some random devoicing which I must've justified at one stage, or maybe I just wasn't paying attention when I named it.)
