All Teletype keyboards used the above ("bit-paired") pattern, but when
computer terminals (and later PCs) took off, there was a pressure to
adopt the IBM Selectric standard in the U.S., since most professional
typists had it burned into their fingers. In Japan, there was no such
pressure, and keyboards have remained bit-paired.
