As a word o comment... (Sorry, I accidentally deleted the thread, so I
cannot refer directly to things already said.
AFAIK the word came into Russian from Polish and it's Polish where it
gained the new meaning (intellectuals who form an artistic, social, or
political vanguard or elite). Many "europeisms" were introduced into
Russian through Polish.
Etymologies referencing to Latin "intelligens" probably try to explain
the origin of the word "inteligent" of which "intelligentsia" is a
collective derivative or rather... hmm.. corelative.
