I must agree with Christophe. I learnt English, German and French starting
at elementary school purely through usage: learning children's rhymes,
engagin in conversation etc. Only after a few years did I learn my first
grammar. Now, it has been 8 years since I last had French and 6 years since
I last had German, but I can still speak and understand French at a basic
level, and speak and understand German reasonably well.
