AAAAAAAAAHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH!!!!!!!!!!!! You did NOT just say "tone
sandhi", did you??? *hunting for a big knife!* Sorry, but I'm learning
Taiwanese right now and the sandhi's killing me. Mandarin sandhi's a
pick-nick, but Taiwanese is a banquet of horrors! Tones1,2,3,4,5,7 & 8
become 7,1,2,2,7,3 & 3 respectively except when followed by a2 when they
change to 7,3,3,3,7,7 & 7 respectively (I think). These changes apply to
every syllable in the phrase except the last syllable of the phrase and so
may extend for several words or even a whole sentance. I'm not sure if the
extend even farther in connected dialogue or not since I haven't learned
enough vocab to get that far yet. I doubt that I'll have any hair left by
the time I do anyway.
