I realize this is an early announcement but I wanted
to share with the group. In my never-ending struggle
to spread the good news of conlanging, I've been given
the go-ahead for doing an exhibit on constructed
languages at Cleveland Public Library in May 2008. I
work in the Literature Department (which includes
linguistics, fiction, etc.) which is also where the
exhibit will be placed so this is actually part of my
job. The exhibit space includes 6 large cases, 2
smaller cases (these are like museum exhibit cases)
and flat panels for poster-size sheets. Below are
several of my proposed topics for the larger cases:
Historical Perspective:
Platos Cratylus, Hildegard of Bingen, John Wilkins,
Solresol, George Delgarno.
Books highlighted: Gullivers Travels, Gargantua &
Pantagruel, Utopia, etc.
J.R.R. Tolkien: The Shakespeare of Conlangs
Tolkien & the languages of Middle-earth, plus Peter
Jacksons movies and David Salos A Gateway to
Sindarin; Helge Fauskanger & Ardalambion
Esperanto & Other International Auxiliary Languages
Photos of Zamenhof, the Esperanto flag, story of
Moresnet/Neutral Moresnet (country 1816-1919).
Mention Gattaca, Angoroj (1964-1st fully Esperanto
film), Incubus (1965)
Volapük, Interlingua, Ido, etc.
Linguistics & Languages: Exploration, Inspiration, and
Deviation
linguistics books, IPA & X-SAMPA chart, display;
interesting languages w/variations, etc.
Greenberg's Language Universals; Describing
Morphosyntax
tlhIngan Hol: Klingon Language & Culture
origins: Marc Okrand and Klingon Language Institute;
Klingon Language Institute; conventions/ costumed
fans vs. Klingon-speakers (The Week, 9/7/07 article)
The Conlanging Community
Virtual and Reality-based groups: ZBB, CONLANG-L,
LCS
Conlangers and their art; Conferences and meet-ups
(LCC, Tolkienian Linguistics, etc.); photos and logos
from conferences, groups, etc. as well as individual
conlangers.
I will update CONLANG as May 2008 approaches.
Fiat lingua!
