Many varieties of English (not mine) do the same with the word "God", which
has distinct respectful and profane pronunciations.  I make it /gA:d/ in
either case, but the range of variation goes from /gOd/ to /gO:d/ to /gAd/
to /gA:d/ to /gad/.
