What's always bothered me about conlangs that are "averaged" versionsof "common"
languages is that they never seem to include the TRULY"average" languages.
After all, Mandarin is the first tongue for morepersons than... well, a
whole lot. I've always wished to see, um,Sino-Français or Melayu-Suomen:
some lucky minority language matched upwith a real numerically powerful
tongue. After all, you know that if Mars is colonised that those who are
goingto emigrate aren't going to be Germans and Americans, they're going
tobe droves of, um, the appropriate equivalent of modern-dayPalestinians,
Eritreans, Javanese and the like. Wish I spoke
Finnish...em'ly*****"In general, though, I'm missing
what we used to call Manic Pop Thrill- exuberance may be the word, I don't
know. Also, to pinch a word fromKieron Gillen, triumphalism. Which I guess
you sort of find in Millar &Hitch's THE ULTIMATES, the stadium rock of
comics. Knowing you'regetting a hundred thousand people punching the air
when you haveCaptain America chop an alien Nazi in half and yell
'Surrender?! Youthink this A on my head stands for FRANCE?'"- Warren
Ellis, bad signal, 21 may 2004Ω
