It was /D/ > /x/ (but voiced, however you write that.
Then this was frequently lossed completely,
diphthongizing and lengthening vowels as well as
rounding some vowels. It's pretty much only still
pronounced as a consonant in the word initial
position. Also, this is all relevant to only the
non-palatal /D/. Palatal /D/ became /j/ just like
palatal voiced /x/.
