Technical help on mutt?

I have recently switched to mutt as my main mail client, and I can't
figure out how to get it to render Latin-1 properly. With the default
LANG setting of "en_US.UTF8" I get \nnn octal escapes, and with "en_US"
I get ?s. Putting 'set charset="iso-8859-1"' into the .muttrc file
doesn't help either. The problem is definitely not in the terminal
window or the font, as other character-mode apps work fine.
Can anyone help? The workaround I need to display proper Latin-1 is
very annoying.
