I notice that /u/ tends to be slightly fronted and laxer. Not quite
central, but close. Actually, I believe there are dialects that use /y/
for /u/.
Also, in my speach, the rounding is a bit lax. /w/, on the other hand,
is pretty much as round as you can get. I find producing an IPA /u/ to
be a bit of a work out for my tongue and lips. :-)
