Rather, it means largely the same thing. However, "God forbid" is the
original form. It is exactly the same structure as "Hallowed by thy
name, thy kingdom come, thy will be done" in the traditional translation
of the Lord's Prayer.
Other expressions preserving that archaic subjunctive are "God Bless",
"God grant", "Heaven forbid". So far as I can tell, all religious.
