Oops, yes, that's the one I was thinking of. D'oh.
The animate plural one is {pu'} and while I think it also evolved from
such a lines change (since it's homophonous with the particle
indicating past tense [later changed to perfect{ive?} aspect]), it
wasn't that particular scene.
