Unvoiced plosives are often aspirated, which adds to the confusion. /p/
is just like /b/ except for voicing, but it's usually /p_h/ versus /b/.
That's my theory, at least. I have a few others, one of which I have
written a short paper on. It targets exactly which people cause which
types of language change.
