Well, [E & O] are allophones of /e A o/ in closed syllables (e.g.,
/na'sjon/ = [nA'sjOn], /na'sjones/ = [nA'sjonEs]). So, it's simply a
phonemic split conditioned by the loss of syllable-final /s/.
