"Mary" is not extraneous. It informs us that Mary is
being addressed, or that what is said is being told to
Mary.
Thus: "Mary, John is coming to supper tonight."
becomes
telling( to Mary, that {coming{ who John, to supper,
during tonight}}
Or expressed in a slightly different syntax:
telling( TO.Mary, THAT.{coming{ WHO.John,
WHERETO.supper, TIME.tonight}}
