It's an operating system, like Windows, except 1) it's free (Windows costs you about $200 of the price of any computer you buy), and 2) you get a lot more with it, and 3) you can change it if you don't like it, or pay someone else to do so, or wait until free improvements are dropped on your head, and 4) ... but this is OT.
