I can compose entire, coherent storylines during the semi-conscious time
after lying down and before fully falling asleep. After that, I sometimes
get into a semi-conscious dream mode where I'm actually actively composing
my dream as it comes. At first, I'll be manipulating the dream, but then
it starts taking over, and eventually all coherence is lost to the birds.

LOL!! A paper phone! Reminds me, actually, of those strange semi-awake
dreams I used to have -- once, I dreamt that a cousin who had moved to
another country returned to visit. Towards the end of the dream, we were
outside the door, saying goodbye, and I didn't want him to go. I wanted to
walk with him to see him off, but I was moving slower and slower.
Eventually, I was almost paralysed, and so frustrated because my knee just
won't budge. I remember literally bending over and trying to move my legs,
but they became as stiff as stone.
And then I woke up kicking, with a cramp in my leg and feeling sore all
over. :-P
