Good point, and one which I should know better than to have allowed my mind
to gloss over.
German was my fourth language. In the German which I was taught (which
native speakers tell me is accentless Hoch Deutsch), by following your train
of thought, I realize now that: 'z' of 'Zeit', 'Platz' etc. is [t_s] but
'ts' of 'cats' is [ts] or even [t's] if I force myself back into the accent
I learned as a child.
[t_s] is the sound I had in mind.
