Historical reasons, as far as I know. I think the gateway used to be to eGroups or Onelist or some other such name, which was apparently a decent enough service, but was bought out by Yahoo at some point.

I use Gmane for a couple of other mailing lists and rather like it. I probably wouldn't use Gmane for CONLANG-L myself but wouldn't mind if a mirror existed there. But I can't speak for the group. Cheers, -- Philip Newton <philip.newton@...>
