actually i'd consider french to be a harsh language. it sounds a little
harsher than german to me.
i think stops are usually less harsh then fricatives, voiced fricatives
are usually less harsh than voiced ones, and any fric/voiced stop farther
back than palatal except [k], [q] and [h] is harsh.
