There is an interesting usage in this area (Blue Ridge Mtns.) that
fascinates me. People often call our church for help with their
bills. Almost always they phrase it thus: "I was wanting to know if
you could...." Shades of Eliza Doolittle's father!
I would have said, "I wanted to know if you could..." or "I'd like to
know if you could..." Or simply "Can you help me with....?"
BTW, with respect to a recent posting by Thomas Weir, don't you love
the word "nonconcatenative"?
