Barbara Babbles;
Islam still spread, but by trade rather than Jihad; except for Coptic
Egypt/Ethiopia (which encompasses our Sudan) Africa became Islamic (no
European colonies in later times due to this) much southern coastal India,
and the major islands in the Indian Ocean.
Naturally, apart from two enclaves (one Christian, on hebaru) the Arabian
peninsular and much of Persia are Islamic too. Islam ranks 3rd (Buddhism
being 2nd) among the world religions. Jihad came to be seen as a weapon of
defense rather than a way of spreading the word; thus were the ways of the
Prophet were reinterpreted by The Companions of the
Prophet...... after resounding military defeats <g>
As for Israel, the Bzyantines never surrendered their hold upon it, the
Jews
(or "Hebaru" as they're called after an old Egyptian word) never lost their
homeland
and there was no Diaspora. The Prophet never entered Jerusalem and that City
is not Holy to Muslims. Both Byzantium and the Caliphate preached tolerance
for "people of the book". So the Hebaru are a small religious minority in
my world, respected for their biblical scholarship and wisdom.
