Why not use an expontial system? Let 1m be "0", 1cm be "-2", a kilometre be
"3" etc. This means that things on a human scale will get nicy number near
zero. The obscene numbers would be reserved for the really tiny and really
huge things. The bad thing is that your oboe'll turn out to be a fractional
number ...
