One possibility for the sexual imbalance is that since many conlangs are closely allied with fantasy or SF, and this is read overwhelmingly by males (never mind why - that's another question!) then it's us chaps who have the greater incentive. I don't think it's anything to do with linguistics, other than fantasy linguistics as a subset of fantasy writing. Mike
