Okay, here's my reply:

No? Just listen carefully, and you'll find out that we really do have the bad
habit to pronounce /e/ like [ej] (or worse: [Ej]), and /o/ like [ow] (or again
worse: [Aw]).
But of course don't listen to Jan (not me) or your in-laws. In Brabant they
probably have their own rules :)
